Your "automation" isn't automated.
There's a difference between a workflow with AI in it, and a workflow AI actually runs. Most companies have built the first one and think it's the second.

AI-assisted
A human does the task, with AI helping draft, summarize, or suggest. The human still triggers every step, reviews every output, and makes every decision. This is most companies' current state. It's useful — it's just not automation.
AI-executed, human-supervised
AI completes the task end-to-end, but a human reviews and approves before anything ships. This is a real step forward, but it doesn't remove the bottleneck — it just makes the human's job faster.
Fully automated, human-monitored
AI completes the task and takes the action, with humans only involved for exceptions and periodic quality checks. This is actual automation. The human's job shifts from "doing the task" to "watching the system."
Why this distinction matters
If you're at Level 1 and think you're at Level 3, you'll never see the time savings you expected — because the human bottleneck never actually left the process. You've added a tool, not removed a step.
This is the single biggest reason AI automation projects disappoint: not because the AI didn't work, but because the workflow was never redesigned to remove the human checkpoint. The AI got bolted onto the old process instead of replacing it.
